Katie commissioned Dawn to print custom fabrics for furnishings in the small house Katie and her husband share in Warren, Rhode Island. “This” fabric designed by Oliveira Textiles adorns “that” set of old mahogany dining chairs that Katie inherited from her parents.

In broad strokes, Dawn (a surface pattern/textile designer) and Katie (an architect/designer) discuss what they mean by “This with That,” and introduce what will be a recurring segment on the podcast.

When embarking on a design project, how do you decide what works with what? Does this work with that? What are the decisions at the beginning of a project that help determine the overall project direction?

Dawn and Katie speak about achieving balance when choosing, “this to go with that,” as well as creating a conversation between this choice and that set of conditions in order to bring clarity to design decision making.

“This” ranch-house renovation/addition by Katie Hutchison Studio responds to the siting, massing, and simplicity of “that” original ranch, which included an attached breezeway and garage, while re-imagining the house, new carport, and shed to better relate to the site, natural daylight, and the homeowners’ preferred lifestyle.
